Identify risk and protective factors for mental health
Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a universal mental health promotion intervention
To implement an intervention to prevent depression and anxiety and evaluate its effectiveness
As a transversal objective, the project aims to co-create the different phases of the project with all the agents involved (students, faculty, managers and student services).
This study is part of the international initiative World Mental Health-International College Student (WMH-ICS) Surveys.
It will be carried out in 5 universities in 4 Spanish regions: Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), Universitat Jaume I (UJI) of Castellón, Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) of Elche, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) of Barcelona, and Universidad de Zaragoza (Unizar).
The Mar Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) in Barcelona is the centre that coordinates the study.
All undergraduate students of the participating universities who are 18 or older and are studying in one of the participating universitites.
The study has several components:
1) Online survey on mental health. It contains socio-demographic questions, on mental health, use of mental health care services, childhood/adolescence experiences, stressful recent experiences, social life and support, sexuality and personality. It will be replied to in mid-year 2021-2022, and again 12 months later.
2) Personalized reports (mental health promotion intervention). After answering the online questionnaire on mental health, each participant will be able to download a report with information on their mental health, healthy lifestyles, effective treatment options and available mental health care services.
3) Assessment Via Smartphone. After answering the online questionnaire on mental health, some students will be invited to participate in the 15-day Mobile Via Evaluation. In it, information will be gathered through an online quiz and mobile app about the quality of dream, stress, life habits, depression and anxiety, as well as a more general questionnaire at the beginning and end.
4) Prevention of depression and anxiety. Students who report symptoms of depression and/or anxiety at the begining of the 2023-24 school year will be invited to participate in an online intervention for the prevention of depression and anxiety, eight weeks in length.
Participation in the study will give you information about your mental health and the factors that may be influencing it. You will receive a personalized report with recommendations for improving your mental health, information on healthy living habits, effective treatment options and available mental health care services.
On the other hand, if you participate in the Mobile Assessment and answer at least 80% of the surveys (including the initial and final ones), you will earn a reward of 30 euros.
In addition, participating in the study will contribute to the improvement of existing knowledge about the mental health among university students, and on the effectiveness of interventions to promote mental health and to prevent symptomatology of depression and anxiety in university students.
